What does it mean when a product shows as backorder?

Some products are not in stock. These will be ordered as per customer request. The delivery times for these products will be longer and can take up to 4 weeks to be delivered. Customers will be contacted upon submission of their order to inform them of the expected delivery duration. The product pages will show if items are in stock or in backorder.
